I am some what familiar with the logistics of computer audio. In case I will assume that the problem in your sound card is. Depending on the type you may not be compatible with the codec. AC3, but you use a media player. Or try to improve the codec. Firmware for your sound card. You may want to try. And download new drivers for your sound card. It may work best with your DVD player because it supports the codec and the output can be successful.
